Seven years after the fast-food chicken sandwich wars ignited consumer demand across QSR drive-thrus, A&W Restaurants is finally entering the ring. The 900-location chain launched its first-ever Crispy Chicken Sandwich on August 12, available in three varieties: Crispy, Deluxe (with lettuce and tomato), and a limited-time Nashville Hot.
The hand-breaded sandwich has been in development for years, according to the brand. To drive trial at launch, A&W is running a buy-one-get-one-free promotion on all three chicken sandwich varieties from August 17 through August 23 at participating locations — no app or coupon required, upon request at the counter or drive-thru.
The Menu Play
"For the last seven years, chicken sandwich fans have been picking sides, and we've been behind-the-scenes perfecting our Crispy Chicken Sandwich recipe," said Betsy Schmandt, CEO and President of A&W Restaurants. "We know chicken sandwich loyalties run deep, but we believe one bite will win fans over."
The chicken sandwich category has remained one of the most competitive battlegrounds in quick-service foodservice since 2019, when a viral social media exchange between two major QSR chains sent consumers flooding into drive-thrus nationwide. For operators co-branded with A&W — including roughly 230 locations paired with KFC or Long John Silver's — adding a proprietary chicken sandwich gives the brand a distinct menu identity separate from its co-tenant's poultry lineup.
Loyalty and Digital Activation
A&W is pairing the product launch with a consumer engagement campaign at AWAllegiance.com, where guests can submit a loyalty pledge for a chance to have their Instagram handle featured on a digital "Hall of Heroes" display wall. The campaign reflects a broader foodservice loyalty trend in which QSR and convenience operators tie LTO launches directly to digital engagement mechanics to build first-party customer data.
For c-store operators carrying A&W as a branded foodservice program, the chicken sandwich addition broadens the hot-foods menu beyond the chain's signature root beer floats and burger lineup. Chicken sandwiches have consistently ranked among the top-selling foodservice items at convenience stores, with hand-breaded and premium varieties commanding higher ticket averages than roller-grill alternatives. A fresh, hand-breaded SKU positioned against QSR incumbents could give A&W-licensed c-store locations a meaningful traffic driver, particularly during the lunch and dinner dayparts where inside-sales comps remain a challenge for many operators.
Founded in 1919, A&W holds the distinction of being America's oldest franchised restaurant chain. Its more than 900 locations span 35 U.S. states and markets in Asia, with more than 600 operating as single-brand units.
