Autonomous restaurant startup Appetronix has hired Heather Wilkie as Chief Financial Officer, bringing in a former Compass Group Canada executive to lead the financial build-out ahead of a planned Series A raise and accelerated unit rollout across North America.
Wilkie's appointment comes roughly 13 months after Appetronix launched its first commercial deployment — a Donatos Pizza unit at Columbus International Airport in partnership with HMSHost, the world's largest airport concessionaire. The company now operates across multiple cuisine platforms and holds a portfolio of patents covering food-grade robotic systems designed to automate back-of-house functions including portioning, cooking, plating, and sanitation with zero on-site employees.
Wilkie's Foodservice Pedigree
Wilkie spent seven years at Compass Group Canada, where she rose through six promotions from Vice President of Finance into executive leadership in Business Transformation. In that role she built and managed a team overseeing more than 100 project implementations across 600-plus kitchens — exactly the kind of large-scale operational finance experience Appetronix needs as it moves from single-site proof-of-concept to multi-unit deployment. Before Compass, she served as finance lead for Deloitte's Canadian Consulting practice and sat on its Canadian Consulting Executive Committee.
Her relationship with Appetronix predates her hire: while running Compass Canada's innovation function, Wilkie developed partnerships with more than 50 third-party organizations, Appetronix among them. That insider familiarity with the technology shapes her read on the company's trajectory.
"I have watched Appetronix evolve, and what exists today is a different company," Wilkie said. "The leadership team is strong, the strategy around next-generation QSR is clear, and there is real start-up energy behind it. Combining that momentum with a commercialized product already operating in the field made this an opportunity I was excited to take on."
Series A on the Horizon
Nipun Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO of Appetronix, framed the hire explicitly around fundraising readiness. "She has scaled complex foodservice operations across hundreds of kitchens, and was among the first to identify the potential of our technology while running the innovation team at Compass," Sharma said. "Heather's experience allows us to prepare for our Series A in the coming months, which is exactly what this stage of growth requires."
For c-store and travel-plaza operators, the Appetronix model is worth tracking. Fully autonomous QSR-in-a-box systems address the channel's persistent labor challenge — forecourt and foodservice staffing pressures that have pushed many operators toward grab-and-go formats and automated dispensed-beverage programs. An airport concession environment is a credible stress test: high throughput, constrained back-of-house square footage, and around-the-clock demand. If the HMSHost deployment demonstrates throughput and food-quality consistency at scale, the format could translate to high-volume travel centers and urban convenience locations where labor availability remains tight.
As CFO, Wilkie will lead development of the financial infrastructure required to scale unit deployment domestically and internationally, with the Series A expected to serve as the primary funding vehicle for that expansion.
