Instacart has launched Clementine, an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant available to most U.S. and Canadian customers on the Instacart Marketplace, and simultaneously expanded its enterprise Cart Assistant to a fresh wave of retail banner partners. The move represents the most visible consumer-facing deployment yet of the grocery technology company's AI strategy, which has been building quietly across its platform infrastructure.

The Intelligence Stack

Clementine's capabilities rest on a data foundation that most grocery operators cannot replicate independently: more than 1.6 billion lifetime orders, a catalog of over 2 billion items, and more than 10 million daily inventory signals pulled from nearly 100,000 stores across more than 2,200 retail banners in North America. That real-time inventory layer matters for the c-store and grocery channel alike — a recipe recommendation that sends a customer to a shelf where the product is out of stock erodes trust fast. Instacart's system surfaces only what is actually available at a shopper's chosen store at the moment of the query.

A Harris Poll commissioned by Instacart found that more than 80% of Americans report stress around the nightly dinner decision, and more than three in five said they would be interested in an AI assistant to help. Early Clementine usage data shows orders placed through the assistant exceed Instacart's industry-reported $115 average basket size, with customers moving from simple restock tasks toward higher-complexity use cases like recipe discovery over time.

The Retail-Facing Play

The enterprise dimension may carry more weight for the trade channel. Cart Assistant is Instacart's white-label version of the same technology, deployed on a grocer's own website and app under the retailer's branding. Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman's are live now; ALDI U.S., Harmon's, The Save Mart Companies, and Stew Leonard's are in the pipeline. Grocers can configure the assistant's name, tone, loyalty program integration, and recipe content, keeping the customer relationship — and the data — within their own ecosystem.

For regional and independent operators competing against large-format chains with substantial technology budgets, a white-label AI assistant accessible via the Instacart Enterprise platform levels the playing field without requiring an in-house engineering team. That positioning is consistent with how Instacart has marketed its enterprise platform tools to mid-market grocers and regional banners over the past several years.

Broader AI Distribution

Instacart has also wired Clementine's commerce engine into external AI platforms. Partnerships with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google mean that a grocery query started in Claude, ChatGPT, or Google's AI Mode in Search can route directly to an Instacart checkout, with the customer choosing their preferred retail banner for delivery or pickup. For food and beverage brands advertising on the platform, that expanded surface area across third-party AI assistants represents a meaningful new discovery channel beyond the Instacart app itself.

Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, framed the launch around the company's order history depth: "We've spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work." John Adams, Vice President and Head of Product, emphasized personalization: "What we built with Clementine is a system that understands not just what you need, but how you eat, what you love, and what's on the shelves at your store right now."

Clementine is accessible today via the Instacart app and website. On mobile, users tap the Clementine icon above the search bar; on desktop, it appears in the left-hand navigation.
