The Partnership

Petsense by Tractor Supply, the pet specialty subsidiary of Tractor Supply Company, has made Instacart its exclusive same-day delivery partner, putting the retailer's full assortment of pet food and supplies in front of Instacart shoppers nationwide as of August 25. The deal covers all 209 Petsense locations across 23 states and carries a no-markup pricing commitment — meaning customers pay shelf price for specialty and boutique pet brands that are in many cases exclusive to Petsense doors.

Fulfillment is promised in as fast as one hour through the Instacart app and website. Petsense joins more than 2,200 national and local retail banners already on the Instacart Marketplace, which the company says represents nearly 100,000 storefronts in aggregate.

Why It Matters

For operators tracking the pet-care category — one of the fastest-growing ancillary segments in convenience and rural-format retail — the deal illustrates how specialty chains are leaning into on-demand delivery to defend share against mass-channel competitors. Petsense is positioned primarily in small and mid-size communities, markets that overlap considerably with the rural and suburban footprints favored by chains such as Casey's and many single-store operators who stock pet food as a trip-driver category.

Shawn Blankenship, Vice President of Petsense by Tractor Supply, framed the move as a convenience play. "By partnering with Instacart to offer same-day delivery, customers can now receive our top-quality assortment of pet food and supplies in as little as an hour," he said. The retailer carries nationally recognized brands including Fromm, Orijen, Acana, Purina Pro Plan, Hill's Science Diet, Victor, Royal Canin, and NutriSource — a brand roster that skews premium and therapeutic, segments where click-and-deliver demand is particularly strong.

Blake Wallace, Vice President of Commercial Partnerships at Instacart, noted the exclusivity angle: the platform is Petsense's sole same-day delivery outlet, not one of several, which typically drives better algorithmic placement and promotional support within the Instacart app.

Promotional Launch

To seed trial, Instacart is offering $10 off a first qualifying Petsense order of $50 or more through September 30, 2026 — a standard Marketplace onboarding promotion the platform has used with other specialty retail launches. For c-store and rural-format retailers watching category adjacencies, the no-markup structure is the more strategically notable detail: it removes a long-standing objection from price-conscious pet owners who have historically resisted delivery surcharges on consumable items like kibble and wet food.

The pet-care category has seen sustained volume growth in the post-pandemic period, driven in part by pandemic-era pet adoption rates and an ongoing premiumization trend in food and treat SKUs. Delivery penetration in pet supplies has lagged grocery but is accelerating, particularly for repeat-purchase consumables — the same behavioral pattern that has made dispensed beverage and loyalty programs effective retention tools in the convenience channel. Retailers evaluating assortment expansions into premium pet food or same-day fulfillment partnerships will find the Petsense-Instacart structure a useful reference point for how exclusivity terms and no-markup commitments can be structured to protect brand equity while driving basket size.
