The Lineup

Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard is leaning hard into fall's most bankable flavor window, adding four limited-time frozen treats built around Pumpkin and Apple Butter to menus at all 600-plus locations. The Philadelphia-based chain, which bills itself as the largest Italian Ice concept in the world, is targeting the same seasonal demand surge that has driven pumpkin spice into one of foodservice's most reliable annual revenue events.

The four new builds span both frozen custard and dispensed-beverage formats. On the pumpkin side, the chain is offering a Pumpkin Frozen Coffee — its signature blended coffee format combined with pumpkin crème and finished with whipped cream — and a Pumpkin Pie Concrete, which blends vanilla frozen custard with pumpkin crème and vanilla wafers. Apple Butter slots in across an Apple Butter Milkshake (vanilla custard, apple butter flavor, whipped cream, cherry) and an Apple Butter Concrete that adds vanilla wafers and apple pie topping to the base.

Loyalty and Mix

Rita's is pairing the LTO push with a loyalty-member acquisition play. New signups to the Rita's Ice app receive one free small Ice, Custard, or Gelati after their first purchase — a mechanics structure common in dispensed-beverage and frozen-treat programs that drives first-party data capture alongside trial of new SKUs. The chain's app is available through Apple and Google Play stores.

For c-store operators watching adjacent frozen-treat and QSR-at-cstore trends, the Rita's move underscores how seasonal flavor programming — executed tightly around a two-to-three month window — can lift transaction counts without adding permanent menu complexity. The pumpkin category in particular has become a reliable traffic driver: NACS data consistently shows that dispensed and frozen-beverage categories benefit disproportionately when operators rotate in seasonal flavors tied to consumer anticipation cycles.

Channel Context

Rita's 600-unit footprint skews toward strip-center and standalone shops rather than forecourt-attached locations, but its frozen custard and Italian Ice positioning is directly relevant to c-store foodservice operators building out back-of-house frozen-treat or dispensed-beverage programs. The chain's model — Italian Ice made fresh daily on-site from a rotating selection of more than 80 flavors — represents a labor-intensive benchmark that single-store operators and regional chains increasingly try to approximate through proprietary frozen dispensed programs.

"There's a reason pumpkin season has become a celebration of its own, and at Rita's, we're all in," said Carmela Hughley, Senior VP of Marketing Insights & Innovation at Rita's. The LTOs are available now for a limited time. Operators tracking seasonal LTO strategy in foodservice will want to note how Rita's is using app-gated free-item offers to convert seasonal curiosity into loyalty enrollment — a tactic increasingly visible across both QSR and convenience foodservice channels.
