The Deal
Sargento, the Plymouth, Wis.-based family-owned cheese company with $1.7 billion in net sales, has acquired La Terra Fina, a maker of premium dairy-based dips, spreads, and quiches founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983. The move marks Sargento's first deliberate push into grocery and club deli departments and adds roughly 250 employees to its workforce of more than 2,500. Financial terms were not disclosed by either privately held company.
The acquisition creates a stand-alone Deli Business Unit that sits alongside Sargento's existing Consumer Products and Food Service & Ingredients (FSI) divisions. La Terra Fina had been a private affiliate of Catamount Management Corporation since 2015. For c-store and foodservice buyers, the deal signals that a major branded cheese supplier is now competing directly in the refrigerated deli perimeter — a category that has drawn growing shopper traffic as consumers seek fresh, premium grab-and-go options.
Leadership Reshuffled
Sargento named Erin Price General Manager of the new Deli Business Unit. Price, who brings more than 20 years of CPG experience, previously served as General Manager of Consumer Products, Food Service & Ingredients and Vice President of Strategic Planning. La Terra Fina President and CEO Stephen Cottrell and his leadership team will report to Price. Her mandate includes integrating La Terra Fina into Sargento's operating model and building out the company's broader deli strategy.
Jeremy Schellin steps into Price's former role as General Manager of Consumer Products, the business unit that markets Sargento's branded natural cheese slices, shreds, chunks, and snacks through grocery and retail channels nationwide — making Sargento the No. 1 branded natural cheese company in the U.S. Schellin most recently led FSI, where the division recorded a milestone $500 million in net sales for the first time in its 40-year history. Joy Judski has been appointed Interim General Manager of FSI, continuing to lead FSI Sales while the company searches for a permanent replacement.
What It Means for the Channel
For operators and category managers sourcing from the deli set, Sargento's entry into premium dips and quiches adds a well-recognized branded partner to a segment that has been expanding steadily. Refrigerated dips — driven by better-for-you positioning and clean-ingredient profiles — have outpaced center-store snack categories in recent years, and La Terra Fina's dairy-based line sits squarely in that trend. Club and grocery deli buyers in particular will now be dealing with a single Sargento sales organization that spans natural cheese, foodservice ingredients, and premium deli prepared foods.
Michael Pellegrino, Chief Operating Officer of Sargento, called the acquisition "an important milestone and growth engine" and pointed to alignment across employees, customers, suppliers, and shareholders as the strategic rationale. Louie Gentine, third-generation Chairman and CEO, framed the move as consistent with Sargento's generational approach to innovation: "Entering the Deli is an exciting opportunity that expands our capabilities, builds on the strength of the La Terra Fina brand and brings new consumers to Sargento."
For convenience channel buyers evaluating refrigerated deli and foodservice programs, the Sargento-La Terra Fina combination is worth tracking — particularly as dip and spread SKUs find their way into higher-volume prepared-food sets at larger-format c-stores. The company's FSI division already supplies leading restaurants and food manufacturers, giving the new Deli unit a ready distribution network to leverage. Coverage of similar dairy and deli M&A moves shows that brand-backed entrants in the refrigerated case tend to accelerate category premiumization.
