Smoothie King reported 9% same-store sales growth in July 2026, capping a second quarter in which the 1,250-unit chain opened 19 new locations, added 32 new store commitments to its development pipeline, and recorded its highest volume of qualified franchise inquiries since it began tracking the metric in 2017.

The Dallas-based franchisor says its full-year same-store sales growth is averaging nearly four times the industry rate — a benchmark it pegs to Technomic Top 500 data — even as many QSR peers continue to lean on discounting to defend traffic. From 2020 through 2025, system sales climbed 64.0% and average unit volumes rose 27.0%, the company said.

Food Platform Fuels the Lift

The immediate catalyst for July's comp spike was the June rollout of Chicken Flatbreads, the brand's first oven-based protein entrée and its most significant back-of-house expansion to date. Smoothie King deployed ovens across the system at no equipment cost to franchisees, a move designed to preserve the operational simplicity that has distinguished the brand's low-labor model from traditional QSR. The Chicken Flatbreads build on the 2025 launch of the Power Eats Menu — a nationwide food program that earned Nation's Restaurant News' MenuMasters Healthful Innovation award earlier this year — and the 2023 debut of Smoothie Bowls.

Gavin Felder, President and Chief Financial Officer of Smoothie King, framed the food push as a direct response to shifting consumer priorities. "Consumers are placing a greater emphasis on health and wellness than ever before, and with more than five decades of nutritional expertise, Smoothie King is uniquely positioned to lead that movement," Felder said. He added that lower investment costs relative to traditional QSR concepts remain a key selling point for prospective franchisees evaluating the brand against the broader foodservice franchise landscape.

Expansion and Tech Investment

Q2 openings spanned 11 states, including Minnesota, Michigan, Colorado, and New York. New multi-unit development agreements were signed across Arkansas, Ohio, and Florida, bolstering a pipeline that has expanded store count 76% over the past decade — a 6.0% compound annual growth rate. The brand says it ranks among the top five fastest-growing franchised restaurant concepts in the U.S. per Technomic data.

Beyond food, Smoothie King is investing in AI-driven back-of-house technology and operational tools aimed at improving throughput and supporting multi-unit franchisee performance — an area of increasing focus across the broader fast-casual and convenience foodservice segment. For operators and channel observers, the combination of a health-and-wellness positioning, a low-capex franchise model, and an expanding food attach rate positions Smoothie King as a concept worth watching as c-stores and non-traditional retail channels compete for health-oriented daypart traffic.

Smoothie King was ranked No. 17 in Entrepreneur Magazine's 2026 Franchise 500 and has appeared on Technomic's Top 500 Chains list and the Fast Casual Top 100 Movers & Shakers roster.
