Stauffer's Simply Animals® is leaning into the back-to-school snack window with merchandising ideas and a consumer promotion designed to move its animal cracker line into lunchbox rotations and after-school snack drawers this fall.
The York, Pa.-based brand — a subsidiary of Meiji America Inc. with 155 years in the baked-snack category — is highlighting three retail SKUs for the season: Simply Animals Original (available in a 12-count multipack and a 16 oz. bag), plus Cocoa and Glazed Cinnamon in 16 oz. bags. The multipack format is a natural fit for c-store snack sets targeting after-school and grab-and-go traffic, where single-serve and multi-serve better-for-you options continue to outpace conventional cookies in velocity.
The Product Story
Simply Animals is positioned on a clean-label platform — no high-fructose corn syrup, no artificial colors, produced in a peanut-free U.S. facility. That formulation profile aligns with the better-for-you snack trend that has reshaped the convenience-channel baked-snack shelf over the past several years, as operators trade out legacy impulse items for attributes that resonate with millennial parents making routine fill-in purchases.
"Simply Animals brings imagination and fun to lunch boxes, snack time and family activities, while giving parents ingredients they feel good about," said Ken Vlazny, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Stauffer's.
The 13 distinct animal shapes across the line give the brand a point of difference in a cracker set dominated by uniform formats — a minor but measurable factor in repeat purchase among the kid-targeted snack segment.
The Promotional Angle
To extend dwell time with the brand beyond the point of purchase, Stauffer's is continuing its partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nonprofit children's literacy organization. Through November, the children's book "Bryson's Rocket Riddles" is available free on RIF's Skybrary reading app — a content hook that gives the brand a digital touchpoint with family shoppers after the bag leaves the register.
For c-store operators, back-to-school represents one of the more reliable seasonal traffic bumps on the calendar. Families stocking up on portable snacks, beverages, and quick meal components drive above-average basket sizes in August and September, particularly at stores located near school corridors and suburban commuter routes. Positioning a clean-label, kid-targeted cracker in a visible snack-drawer or lunchbox endcap display captures that purchase intent at a high-margin category intersection.
The broader packaged-snack category at convenience has seen sustained volume growth in better-for-you segments, with cracker and baked-snack sub-categories benefiting as operators reduce reliance on traditional salty snacks with less favorable nutritional positioning. Stauffer's multipack SKU is sized to compete in that space without requiring a cold-vault footprint.
