Torchy's Tacos has brought back its Nookies dessert — fried chocolate chip cookie dough bites — to menus across its nearly 120-unit fast-casual chain, ending a more than two-year absence for one of the brand's most-requested items.
First introduced as Lil' Nookies in 2008, the item built a loyal following around its warm cookie dough center and golden-fried exterior. The returning version adds a cinnamon-sugar toss to the original format, a small culinary update the brand's kitchen team developed as part of the relaunch. Torchy's loyalty members got first access through a secret-menu window one week ahead of the general rollout — a move consistent with the growing operator trend of using early-access perks to drive rewards enrollment.
Menu Momentum
The Nookies return is part of a broader burst of menu activity at Torchy's as the chain marks its 20th anniversary year. Earlier in 2026, the Austin-based chain added nachos — another long-requested item — for the first time in its history. More recently, Torchy's launched the Taco Two-Step, a limited-time combo deal available through Nov. 10 aimed at delivering perceived value to its core "Taco Junkies" fan base. Value-oriented combo mechanics have become a key lever across the fast-casual segment as operators try to retain frequency-sensitive guests amid sustained consumer price awareness.
November also brings two limited-time menu additions: the Rebel Yell Taco, built around grilled shrimp, crispy bacon, cabbage slaw, jack cheese, guajillo fried onions, smoky BBQ sauce and chipotle ranch on a flour tortilla; and a Pineapple Margarita made with tequila, Grand Marnier, real pineapple puree and lime juice.
"At Torchy's, we're always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what guests expect from our menu, whether that means introducing something completely new or bringing back a longtime favorite like Nookies and somehow making it even more delicious," said Paul Macaluso, chief executive officer of Torchy's Tacos. "The intersection of culinary creativity, craveable flavors and listening to our guests continues to shape our menu innovation."
What It Means for Operators
The Nookies relaunch illustrates a playbook increasingly common across fast-casual and restaurant-adjacent foodservice: retire a high-affinity item, let demand build on social and in guest feedback channels, then return it with a minor recipe refresh that gives the brand a news hook while preserving the nostalgia value. For c-store operators developing or refining their own foodservice programs, the mechanics are directly applicable — limited-time dessert or snack items with a loyalty-first reveal window can drive both enrollment and visit frequency without significant back-of-house complexity. Fried dessert bites, in particular, translate well to commissary or made-to-order formats already common in larger chain c-store kitchens.
Torchy's has grown from a single Austin food trailer in 2006 to one of the more recognizable names in the better-burger-adjacent fast-casual tier. At roughly 120 units, the chain remains a regional-to-national growth story, and the cadence of menu drops — nachos, combo value deals, LTO tacos and a returning dessert all within a single calendar year — signals an operator leaning into culinary storytelling as a primary traffic driver heading into its third decade.
