The New Lineup

Whataburger is extending its Bacon Wrangler platform for the first time, adding a chicken sandwich to the returning limited-time beef double on Aug. 18. The Bacon Wrangler Chicken — priced from $7.99 — lets guests choose from a classic Whatachick'n, Spicy Chicken, or Grilled Chicken filet, each dressed with Monterey Jack cheese, bacon, crispy onion strings, pickles, and smoky chipotle aioli. The Bacon Wrangler Double, which debuted last summer and returns at $9.99, stacks two fresh 100% beef patties with American and Monterey Jack cheeses, the same toppings, and a Jr. size option for lighter appetites. Both are available for a limited time at participating locations.

Why It Matters for Operators

For the more than 1,200 Whataburger units across 17 states, a dual-protein LTO strategy is a well-tested traffic driver — it pulls existing fans back in while giving chicken-preferring customers a reason to trade up. Corporate Chef James Sanchez framed the extension plainly: "This time around, we wanted to give Guests another way to enjoy those same craveable flavors by introducing the all-new Bacon Wrangler Chicken." The $2 price gap between the chicken and beef entries also creates a natural upsell conversation at the drive-thru, where most Whataburger volume moves.

The chicken sandwich segment remains one of the most competitive battlegrounds in quick-service, with major chains running successive LTOs to hold share. Whataburger's move to attach an existing, proven flavor profile — rather than introduce entirely new components — limits back-of-house complexity while still generating a fresh menu story. That kind of operational discipline resonates at the store level, where labor and prep time are constant pressures.

Loyalty and Digital Push

Whataburger is routing LTO awareness through its app, which awards new account holders a free Whataburger on sign-up and accumulates points on subsequent purchases. For a 1,200-unit regional chain competing against national players with mature loyalty programs, app-linked LTOs serve double duty: they spike downloads during the promotional window and deepen the data set for future targeting. The chain operates around the clock — drive-thru, online ordering, and app — positioning the Bacon Wrangler lineup to capture late-night and early-morning dayparts where incremental ticket lift is often easiest to capture.
