Philip Morris International's U.S. businesses (uspmi.com) are widening the ZYN nicotine pouch shelf set, adding 1.5 mg and 8 mg dry pouch strengths to the existing 3 mg and 6 mg lineup and rolling out ZYN ULTRA, a higher-moisture pouch format authorized by the FDA in August 2026 in 9 mg and 11 mg variants — giving convenience retailers one of the most stratified oral nicotine assortments the category has seen.

The New SKU Map

The expanded dry pouch roster now runs across 13 flavor profiles — including Cool Mint, Black Cherry, Dragonberry, and an unflavored Smooth — at each of the four strengths, substantially deepening the number of facings operators need to plan for. ZYN ULTRA, which carries its own branded flavor names (Arctic Mint, Wintergreen Blast, Peppermint Frost, among others), ships in 10 nine-milligram SKUs and one 11 mg SKU. PMI U.S. also confirmed that in Q4 2026 it will shift the 3 mg and 6 mg dry pouch cans to a 20-pouch-per-can format, citing consumer research favoring the larger count. Retailers currently planogrammed for the smaller can will need to assess shelf-depth and pricing adjustments before the transition lands.

Regulatory Tailwinds

ZYN entered 2025 as the first nicotine pouch to receive FDA marketing authorization following a full scientific review. In June 2026, the agency went further, issuing modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) orders for 20 ZYN SKUs — the first and only nicotine pouch to hold that designation — permitting PMI U.S. to communicate on-pack and at retail that switching to ZYN from cigarettes reduces the risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. That MRTP language gives category managers a compliance-cleared health claim to merchandise against, a meaningful differentiator in a tobacco backbar increasingly crowded with unauthorized competitive products.

Stacey Kennedy, CEO of PMI U.S., framed the portfolio push around the 45 million legal-age Americans who currently use nicotine. "We will continue to innovate to ensure we provide a portfolio of products that meet legal-age adults' diverse preferences so they can move away, and stay away, from combustible cigarettes," Kennedy said.

Manufacturing & Supply Context

Supply constraints were a recurring concern for c-store buyers during ZYN's rapid share climb in 2024 and 2025. PMI U.S. addressed that directly in July 2026 when it began commercial production at a new 148-acre, approximately 780,000-square-foot campus in Aurora, Colorado, supplementing existing operations in Owensboro, Kentucky, and Wilson, North Carolina. The added domestic capacity is a practical signal to chain buyers that the SKU expansion is backed by production throughput, not just marketing ambition.

For single-store operators and regional chains, the actionable near-term question is planogram real estate. Oral nicotine pouches have been one of the fastest-growing tobacco-adjacency categories at the forecourt counter — capturing shelf space previously held by traditional smokeless and snus — and a four-strength dry lineup plus a separate moist tier effectively doubles the decision tree for category resets. Operators should anticipate updated POG support from PMI U.S. sales teams ahead of the Q4 can-size transition.
