The Launch

ALDI is entering the fresh ready-made meal set for the first time, rolling out seven refrigerated, never-frozen SKUs in select markets starting early October, with full national distribution targeted for January 2027. The grocer — ranked No. 1 in Everyday Low Price in the 2026 dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index — is positioning the line squarely at the value end of a category that has seen steady share gains against both foodservice and center-store meal kits.

Five single-serve options are priced under $8; two family-size trays come in under $15. Single-serve SKUs deliver 30 to 46 grams of protein per tray, while family-size portions run 16 to 22 grams per serving. The lineup includes Beef Bolognese Spaghetti, Beef Brisket with White Mac & Cheese, Butter Chicken & Rice, Chicken Burrito Bowl, and Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo on the single-serve side, alongside Chicken and Bacon Mac n' Cheese and Meat Lovers Pizza Bake in family format.

Why Grocery Foodservice Now

The timing reflects a documented shift in how consumers think about convenient eating. According to ALDI, 61% of Americans now cite convenience as a top purchase consideration — a data point consistent with what convenience-channel operators have been navigating for years as grab-and-go and fresh-prepared compete directly with c-store foodservice programs and QSR drive-throughs. For grocery, fresh refrigerated meals represent the same margin-and-traffic opportunity that dispensed beverages and roller-grill programs have long represented for forecourt-anchored retailers.

The meals are merchandised in the refrigerated meals section near the store entrance — high-traffic real estate that mirrors the front-of-store grab-and-go positioning that convenience foodservice operators have prioritized. Supplier is Kitchen Food Company; Terry Jackson, the firm's Head of Food, said the development process ran through hundreds of recipe iterations before the seven were finalized, with protein content and bold flavors driving the brief.

Outlook

ALDI is not treating this as a static set. New meals will appear as ALDI Finds — the chain's rotating limited-time offer mechanism — every month throughout the next year, giving the program a pipeline of innovation without permanent shelf commitments. Joan Kavanaugh, Vice President of National Buying at ALDI U.S., framed the entry as a deliberate category expansion: "We're evolving to meet our shoppers where they are by delivering fresh ingredients, great flavor and unbeatable value."

For operators tracking competitive meal occasions, ALDI's fresh meal push adds another pressure point on the $8-and-under lunch occasion — territory where c-store proprietary foodservice and fast-casual have competed most aggressively. The sub-$8 single-serve price point, in particular, undercuts many QSR combo meals and sits at or below what most convenience chains charge for a hot foodservice entrée, making price-value positioning a likely talking point across the channel.
