The Launch

Grupo Jumex is stepping out of the juice-and-nectar aisle and into performance nutrition with the debut of Jumex Protein Shake™, a ready-to-drink line delivering 30 grams of protein per 12-oz. bottle. The product rolls out immediately to 2,942 Walmart stores nationwide and Walmart.com — giving the 65-year-old Mexican brand a full national footprint from day one.

The three-SKU lineup leans hard on flavor differentiation: Mango, Churro Chocolate, and Vanilla Flan. That positioning is a direct play against the vanilla-chocolate-strawberry defaults that dominate the RTD protein set, a segment where shelf space at mass and c-store channels has expanded sharply as consumer protein-seeking behavior moves from gym-goer niche to everyday occasion.

Why It Matters for Operators

The RTD protein shake category has been one of the faster-moving segments inside the dispensed and packaged beverage cooler. NACS data and category-level scan trends have consistently shown protein and functional beverages claiming incremental cooler doors at convenience retailers, often at the expense of legacy carbonated soft drink facings. For c-store buyers, the Jumex entry adds a flavor-forward option in the single-serve nutrition set — a subset where grab-and-go foodservice adjacency increasingly drives the purchase decision.

Jumex's existing brand equity with Hispanic shoppers is a meaningful asset in the channel. Convenience operators in high-Hispanic-index trade areas have long stocked Jumex nectars as a core SKU; a protein extension under the same flag could accelerate trial in stores where the parent brand already enjoys strong velocity.

"Protein has become part of everyday life for many consumers, but the category can still feel too predictable," said Carlos Madrazo, Country Manager, Jumex USA. "With Jumex Protein Shake™, we wanted to bring a protein shake inspired by Mexican flavors to the shelf."

Scale and Strategy

The Walmart exclusive at launch gives Jumex Protein Shake immediate exposure at massive volume, but the real question for c-store operators is when — and whether — the line migrates to convenience. Salvi Folch, Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Jumex, framed the launch as an evolution of the company's broader channel strategy: "We are entering a large and growing category at national scale, offering consumers a differentiated protein beverage that brings together functionality, convenience, and authentic Mexican-inspired flavors."

For a brand founded in 1961 that built its U.S. presence primarily through grocery and mass channels, a move into lifestyle nutrition signals appetite for new distribution partnerships. Convenience channel buyers evaluating the line will want to see turn data out of Walmart before committing cooler space, but the flavor architecture — particularly Churro Chocolate and Vanilla Flan — is specifically designed to stand apart in a set where indulgent differentiation is increasingly the gating factor for new item acceptance.
