The Deals
Mondelēz International is expanding its sports marketing play into college athletics, announcing sponsorship agreements with five major university programs — the University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of Arkansas, and University of Texas at Austin. The partnerships, facilitated through college sports media firm Learfield, span football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and hockey, with year-round fan activations and in-venue branding across each campus.
The company is also activating named student-athletes under NIL arrangements: USC's JuJu Watkins, Michigan's Trey McKenney and Olivia Olson, Texas's Madison Booker, and Arkansas's Jordan Smith Jr. The brand roster in play includes OREO Cookies, RITZ Crackers, CHIPS AHOY! Cookies, SOUR PATCH KIDS, CLIF BAR, and a limited return of RITZ football-shaped crackers — a seasonal SKU with built-in aisle visibility.
The Retail Tie-In
For convenience and independent operators, the more immediate signal is the retail activation strategy. Mondelēz is deploying high-impact game-day displays at H-E-B, Publix, Walmart, Meijer, Hy-Vee, and Albertsons — all anchored to a core four-SKU bundle of OREO, RITZ, CHIPS AHOY!, and RITZ Bits. The targeted regional footprint maps closely to the five partner schools' home markets, concentrating display spend where college fandom density is highest.
Snack categories remain a top inside-sales driver at c-stores, and collegiate sports tie-ins have historically lifted impulse purchases in the cracker, cookie, and candy segments during football season. Mondelēz's move into campus sponsorships mirrors a broader supplier trend of attaching legacy CPG brands to passion-point events — reducing shelf commoditization by giving shoppers a cultural reason to buy.
What It Means for the Channel
Mondelēz, which posted approximately $38.5 billion in 2025 net revenues, has been steadily building its sports portfolio. The company already holds an "Official Snacking Sponsor" designation with the Kansas City Chiefs and has run activations around the NFL's championship game, Inter Miami CF, and NCAA March Madness. The five-school collegiate push extends that playbook into a younger, multicultural consumer cohort that indexes heavily in high-traffic convenience corridors near campus.
Nick Rogers, Director of Portfolio Marketing & Sponsorships at Mondelēz International, framed the move as a reinforcement of existing gameday behavior: the brand's products, he noted, have been part of those rituals for decades. The college platform gives Mondelēz a mechanism to drive both national brand equity and local retail sell-through simultaneously — a structure that typically supports co-op and promotional funding down to the store level.
For c-store operators stocking salty snack and cookie sets, the sponsorship cycle signals likely promotional price activity and display support on Mondelēz's core SKUs through the fall football window. Retailers near the five partner campuses — particularly in Texas, Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, and Southern California — should expect trade funding conversations tied to the campaign.
