High Liner Foods has rolled out Sea Cuisine Skillet Meals to select U.S. grocery store freezer sections, introducing three complete seafood dinners designed to cook in a single pan in 15 minutes. The launch targets a frozen multi-serve segment that, per Circana data covering the 52 weeks ending September 7, 2025, is heavily skewed toward land proteins — chicken and beef together account for nearly 70% of the top 300 frozen multi-serve SKUs.
The Three SKUs
The initial lineup spans Mediterranean-Style Sole Pasta (22 grams of protein per serving, wild-caught sole with penne, roasted peppers, and a lemon caper sauce), Thai Red Curry Salmon (19 grams of protein per serving, wild-caught salmon with snap peas, carrots, and brown rice), and Chili Garlic Shrimp (15 grams of protein per serving, premium shrimp over chow mein noodles with broccoli and red peppers). All three are positioned as complete meal solutions using responsibly sourced seafood. The products debuted publicly at Seafood Expo North America earlier this year before the retail rollout.
The Demand Case
High Liner's commercial case rests on documented consumer frustration with the frozen meals category. A January 2026 home-use test conducted by Matrix Sciences found that 64% of frozen meal consumers reported being only somewhat satisfied with current options — a metric the company cites as white space for seafood entry. That same study showed more than 87% of test participants said the Skillet Meals exceeded their expectations, and 91% called the prep easy. Circana's National Eating Trends data (12 months ending March 2025) adds further context: 75% of consumers want meals ready in 15 minutes or less, 45% prefer one-dish formats that require no prep, and 41% are actively seeking to increase protein intake.
"Seafood has long been underrepresented in the frozen meals aisle," said Anthony Rasetta, Chief Commercial Officer at High Liner Foods. "With today's consumers looking for options that taste great, come together quickly, and are high in protein, this innovative lineup offers all the quality and convenience they want with none of the wait."
Retail Footprint and What's Ahead
The Skillet Meals are in the frozen aisle at an unspecified number of U.S. retailers now, with broader North American distribution planned. High Liner Foods (TSX: HLF), headquartered in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, markets frozen seafood across retail and foodservice channels under brands including High Liner, Fisher Boy, Mrs. Paul's, Van de Kamp's, and Sea Cuisine. The company describes itself as a major private-label supplier to North American food retailers and grocery distribution networks.
For convenience operators tracking frozen and grab-and-go trends, the Skillet Meals launch signals a supplier push to rebalance the protein mix in the freezer aisle — one that could inform future c-store frozen-set decisions as protein variety and speed-of-prep continue to drive shopper trial.
