Flowers Foods, Inc. (NYSE: FLO) has elected two veteran financial executives — Shaun P. Mara and Ken Plunk — to its board of directors, effective Nov. 18, 2026. Both will serve on the audit and finance committees, bringing the Thomasville, Ga.-based bakery company's board to 10 members.
The move adds deep CPG finance and M&A bench strength at a moment when Flowers is actively reshaping its brand portfolio, which now includes Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Canyon Bakehouse, Simple Mills, Wonder, and Tastykake. The company reported 2025 net sales of $5.3 billion.
The New Directors
Mara brings more than 30 years of consumer products finance experience. He retired in June 2025 as CFO of The Simply Good Foods Company, where he helped oversee the integration of the Quest brand following its public-market debut. His earlier CFO stints span Dean Foods, Teasdale Latin Foods, and Roofing Supply Group, with senior finance roles at William Wrigley Jr. Company and Gillette rounding out a career that also included board and audit committee service at Farmer Bros. Co.
Plunk's background spans consumer packaged goods, retail, manufacturing, and international operations. He served as CFO and senior vice president of information technology at J&J Snack Foods, where he helped drive financial strategy, capital investment, and supply chain expansion. Earlier roles at Walmart, The Coca-Cola Company, and The Home Depot give him a wide cross-channel lens on retail food. He currently sits on the boards of WD-40 Company and Milo's Tea Company, with committee responsibilities covering audit, finance, risk, and governance.
Why It Matters for the Channel
For c-store buyers and category managers tracking the packaged-bakery shelf, Flowers Foods is a consequential supplier. Its direct-store-delivery network stocks bread, buns, and snack cakes across tens of thousands of convenience locations nationwide, making board-level strategic direction directly relevant to forecourt and in-store assortment decisions. The addition of two executives with heavy CPG acquisition and integration experience signals that Flowers intends to keep consolidating — a dynamic that could affect shelf-set negotiations and distribution terms as the company continues to integrate Simple Mills and other recent acquisitions.
Chairman and CEO Ryals McMullian framed the appointments around execution and portfolio discipline. "Their broad financial and transformation experience will be valuable as we continue to strengthen our portfolio, sharpen execution, and transform Flowers for future growth," McMullian said.
For operators sourcing fresh and packaged bakery through direct-store-delivery, the board's renewed emphasis on supply chain and capital investment could translate to steadier service levels and more targeted SKU rationalization — particularly in the high-velocity sandwich bread and snack cake segments that anchor convenience store bakery sets.
