What Instacart Is Launching
Instacart is rolling out two in-store software products — Inventory Intelligence for retail operators and the Store Excellence Portal for CPG brands — that convert real-time shelf-scan data into actionable replenishment and merchandising signals. The launch puts Instacart squarely in the shelf-intelligence space alongside dedicated retail-execution vendors, but with a data moat that rivals can't easily replicate: a network of roughly 600,000 active shoppers visiting stores across North America more than 15 times per store per day on average, generating over 10 million unique data points daily.
The platform draws on imagery captured by Instacart shoppers during pick-and-scan routines, supplemented by Caper Cart cameras powered by Arpalus computer vision technology — a shelf-intelligence startup Instacart acquired earlier. Combined with insights from more than 1.6 billion lifetime orders, the system maps individual products to specific shelf positions and updates continuously throughout the store's operating hours. Traditional inventory systems, which rely on point-of-sale depletions and periodic physical counts, typically can't surface a gap until the shelf has been empty for hours or days.
The Tools in Detail
For store managers, Inventory Intelligence delivers a virtual walkthrough of the store — think a planogram-linked digital twin — where operators can view shelf performance, spot high-velocity items running thin, and model stocking or display changes before executing them on the floor. The system prioritizes restocking by margin and velocity, flags planogram compliance gaps, and feeds demand-forecasting models with near-real-time depletion signals ahead of peak periods like holidays.
For CPG brands and their retail-execution partners, the Store Excellence Portal provides a daily store-level and UPC-level view of on-shelf availability, with a built-in lost-sales estimate expressed as a dollar figure — the kind of metric a field sales rep or broker can act on immediately. The portal also tracks substitution behavior, showing whether a shopper who couldn't find a brand's SKU switched to a competitor or a different pack size. That competitive benchmarking function effectively turns an empty shelf into a category-share signal.
Andy Keenan, Executive Vice President & GM of Branded Retail Services at Advantage Solutions, said access to the Store Excellence Portal data has let his team identify where products are missing, rank stores by sales opportunity, and direct field resources accordingly — recovering lost sales and improving on-shelf availability for the CPG brands Advantage serves.
Channel Context
Out-of-stock rates have been a persistent pain point across the grocery channel. Industry research has consistently pegged average OOS rates in the 5–10% range, with the figure spiking sharply during demand surges and supply disruptions. For convenience and grocery retailers, poor on-shelf availability hits twice: it costs an immediate sale and accelerates basket abandonment or competitor switching.
Instacart's move is relevant beyond pure-play grocery. The company already partners with more than 2,200 retail banners representing nearly 100,000 stores, a footprint that includes c-store-adjacent food retail formats and the growing overlap between convenience and grocery that NACS members navigate daily. Operators evaluating third-party delivery integrations or loyalty and fulfillment partnerships should note that Instacart is positioning its shopper network as a physical-store intelligence asset, not just an e-commerce fulfillment layer.
The solutions are launching in limited rollout with select grocers and CPG brands, with broader availability planned for coming months as part of the Instacart Enterprise platform.
