Mission Foods is pushing deeper into the better-for-you snack segment with four new tortilla-style chip SKUs — a move that gives c-store buyers and category managers fresh product to evaluate as permissible-indulgence snacking continues to drive impulse sales at the register.
The Irving, Texas-based maker of Mission® brand tortillas and wraps is launching Mission® Protein Tortilla Style Chips in Chile Limón and Jalapeño, and Mission® Grain Free Tortilla Style Chips in Sea Salt and Hint of Lime. All four are available now at Kroger and its banner affiliates, with additional retail distribution rolling out through fall 2026.
The Product Details
The Protein Tortilla Style Chips deliver 10 grams of plant-based protein per serving and carry gluten-free and vegan certifications — attributes that resonate with label-conscious shoppers who are increasingly making grab-and-go decisions at the snack fixture inside convenience stores. The two flavors — Chile Limón and Jalapeño — track squarely with the spicy-citrus flavor profiles that have dominated tortilla chip innovation across every retail channel for the past two years.
The Grain Free line is built around 100% cassava flour, whole chia seeds, and avocado oil — a short ingredient deck that plays directly to shoppers reading labels more carefully. Both Sea Salt and Hint of Lime varieties are positioned as a good source of fiber and use non-GMO ingredients throughout. The format — sturdy enough for dipping, light enough for out-of-bag snacking — fits the dual-purpose snack profile that tends to perform well in a c-store foodservice and snack program.
Channel Opportunity
For c-store operators, the timing is worth noting. NACS data has consistently shown salty snacks among the top five inside-sales categories by dollar volume, and the better-for-you subsegment has been capturing an outsized share of new SKU activity. Protein-forward positioning, in particular, has moved from specialty-health to mainstream — a shift that makes Mission's entry credible at conventional snack price points rather than premium ones.
"Our Better for You line has always been about giving people trend-setting options that fit their lifestyle and taste great," said Sathish Mohanraju, VP of Sales and Marketing for Mission Foods. "Whether folks are looking for simpler ingredients or a new favorite everyday snack — these new chips are for them."
Mission Foods began U.S. operations in 1977 with a single California tortilla plant and now operates more than 20 domestic facilities alongside international plants in Europe, Asia, and Mexico — a manufacturing footprint that gives the brand the supply-chain depth to execute a broad retail rollout without the regional scarcity issues that can undercut new-item performance at chain account level.
