The New SKUs
Planters, the Hormel Foods-owned nut brand, is rolling out a three-SKU fall collection this August aimed squarely at the premium salty-snack occasion — a daypart that continues to drive impulse revenue at c-store grab-and-go sets. The lineup adds a new flavor, brings back a seasonal favorite, and stretches its ultra-premium Special Reserve line into a larger shareable format.
New Maple Brown Sugar Almonds (15.25 oz.) debut alongside the returning Apple Cider Donut Cashews (13 oz.), both landing at Kroger, select Albertsons and Safeway locations, Publix, and Ahold banners beginning mid-August. The Apple Cider Donut Cashews are kettle-roasted whole cashews finished with apple and cinnamon flavor — a returning limited-time offer that sold through last fall. The almond SKU is new to the lineup, targeting fall-entertaining occasions with a maple brown sugar profile and a sweet-crunchy texture.
Special Reserve Expansion
The bigger strategic signal is in the Special Reserve tier. Hormel Foods is launching a 34-oz Special Reserve Peanuts format exclusively on Sam's Club e-commerce in early October, expanding on the smaller 13-oz version that returns to Amazon on August 18 for its third consecutive fall season. The product is sourced from a single Virginia grower and produced via small-batch roasting and hand-salting — positioning that aligns with the broader premiumization trend pushing consumers toward provenance-forward snack claims.
"PLANTERS Special Reserve continues to redefine expectations for what a peanut can be," said Gillian Lozak, associate brand manager for the Planters brand. The 34-oz size targets club-channel bulk buyers and seasonal entertaining, a format increasingly relevant as operators stock club-pack and sharing-size snacks to capture basket-building trips.
Why C-Store Buyers Should Watch
For convenience operators, the fall seasonal window is one of the highest-velocity periods for premium salty snacks. Flavor-forward limited-time offers — especially those tied to seasonal nostalgia like apple cider or maple — have proven effective at driving trial and repeat visits at the grab-and-go cooler and snack aisle. Planters' decision to anchor the collection at major grocery chains rather than leading with c-store distribution means operators should expect pull-through consumer demand for these SKUs once grocery placement builds awareness.
The premiumization angle is worth tracking. Hormel's broader foodservice and branded retail strategy has leaned into higher-margin, differentiated products — Special Reserve is the clearest expression of that at shelf. A 34-oz shareable-size entry into the club channel also signals that Hormel sees enough velocity to invest in format extension, which typically precedes broader distribution expansion. C-store buyers evaluating fall planogram resets may want to position flavored premium nut SKUs near dispensed beverage and hot-beverage stations, where seasonal pairing occasions are strongest. All items in the fall collection are available for a limited time only.
